2021 is here!
Allow me to wish you and your families the very best for 2021. We are looking forward to a successful new school year, keeping in mind that we will have to overcome some serious challenges. I believe we, the Queen’s College parents/guardians, learners and staff form one strong team. The success of our team is dependent on effective co-operation and collaboration of all team members.
Success for us in 2021 means that:
1. All of our boys and staff end the year in a healthy state of body, mind and soul. Of course, our wish is the same for all parents and family members.
2. All our boys achieve academic success. For us, academic success means that each boy achieves his full academic potential. It does not mean to merely pass his grade.
I believe that we can achieve these successes if we all take up the responsibility to observe all Covid regulations religiously and give of our very best each day on the academic front. The school is working hard to ensure we give all our boys the support they need to achieve the above mentioned goals.
I have no doubt that all of us are very concerned about the impact Covid-19 has on our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have lost loved ones or friends. I can assure you that our school will put every possible measure in place to keep our staff and boys safe. As we did in 2020, we will endeavour to create and maintain a Covid free bubble on our campus.
Regarding the start of the academic year: The Department of Basic Education has announced that schools will open only on 15 February 2021 for learners. However, Queen’s College will commence the academic year online via Google Classroom and WhatsApp. Our grade secretaries will be in contact with the boys from Monday 25 January to make sure all boys are connected to those platforms and the necessary administrative tasks, eg. timetables and subject choices are communicated.
Please see the planned starting dates for the different grades:
Grades 9, 11 and 12 – Monday 1 February 2021
Grades 8 and 10 – Wednesday 3 February 2021
Please alert your sons to the fact that they do not have an extra two weeks’ holiday and that we expect of them to attend all classes online.
Please be reminded that parents/guardians are responsible for making sure Queenians have the necessary textbooks for the new year.
The school’s book room will be open from 09:00 – 12:00 on the following days: Wednesday, 27 January for Gr 12 Thursday,
28 January for Gr 11 Friday,
29 January for Gr 10 2
Text books can be bought from our official stockist, Spectra, in Bushell Street, Queenstown (or from any reputable school textbook retailer). Please ensure that the ISBN number on the book list correlates with that on the back cover of the text book. Purchasing second-hand text books from fellow learners who used the books during 2020, is also an option our boys can pursue. For ease of reference, all the Booklists were uploaded onto D6 and the school’s website in November 2020.
Return to hostel for boarders
Boarders to return to hostel on Sunday, 14 February 2021 between 13:00 and 17:30. Sunday supper will be served at 17:30.
I am of the strong belief that school communities like ours can play a significant role in stopping the virus. If each one of us is extremely vigilant in adhering to the Covid regulations and we help people in our sphere of influence to do the same, we can stop the virus in our community.
I am looking forward to a year of continued growth for all involved with Queen’s College.
